“After some initial tests, on October 15, 1953, the decisive moment arrived for this racing boat. It broke the world speed record in the 800 kg category. For this, Castoldi moved to Lake Iseo – near Bergamo. There, it reached a maximum top speed of 242.708 km/h, setting a record that has not yet been surpassed in its category. It was a great success for this Ferrari boat, which would remain in competition for a few more years. However, it was only one more year with Castoldi, as in 1954 it suffered a severe accident that led to its retirement.
Stored in a warehouse, it was recovered for action by Nando Dell’Orto, who purchased this racing boat in 1958. Making some modifications to the engine, this new owner led Arno XI to win the 1963 European Championship. After this second life, the Ferrari hydroplane ended up in storage until the late 1990s when it was once again seen on temporary display at the Ferrari Museum. It also underwent its first restoration there, which did not involve much engine work. Something that was only recently corrected with the meticulous work carried out by Ferrari Classiche a few months ago.”
